Description

NEW COLORS ARE NOW AVAILABLE!
To obtain the flats for the newer colors, click the download link and open up the attached ZIP file. It's that easy!

Here we have Gilbert's flats. Full-color and ready to print. The download link is turned on and located right next to the deviation.
To see the finished product, or to have a finished model to refer to for your building, please take a look at the following picture.

The max size (approx. 11x17 inches for the flats) I've made this allows you to be versatile in what size you want to make him. However, I wouldn't make him too small because some parts of this are just easier to accomplish the bigger you make him.
Also
If you want to print this out big to make a large toy, make sure you print it out on card stock or some other thick kind of paper, otherwise your toy will not stand up!!

Now then. Before I give you all the instructions, I'm going to link you to this handy-dandy key so that you know what I'm talking about! Also, you're going to want to use an x-acto knife to cut out all these pieces because scissors are not precise enough to cut all of these edges.

Instructions

- Cut out all of the pieces you see on the flats, including the wings, body, head, fingers and toes.

- Referring to the key, you are going to CUT along all the lines marked as red, and SCORE along all the lines marked as orange (scoring means cutting lightly enough to easily bend the paper along the cut, but not actually cutting the paper all the way through). Make sure you score ONLY on the colored side of the paper!

- Before folding the body together, once you have cut your wings along the line marked, insert each wing, making sure both colored sides match up, into the two slots you cut into his back, adjacent to the circle for the "button."

- Once you have the wing pieces inserted, put them back together, looking how they did before you cut them apart, using a piece of tape. Make sure you tape the white side ONLY. Do not put tape on the colored side.

- Assemble his torso by gluing the tabs along his belly segment where they are marked on the key (meaning the tab on the very end would be glued down right under his tail, etc). Make sure the glue on all the tabs is thoroughly dry before moving on.

- Take the segments labeled "finger and toe" and fold each one in half, colored side out.

- Insert the creased end into the slots marked on his hands and feet (you may wanna mess with how wide the slots are for this to work. This bit gave me trouble...) and put a dot of glue on the "palm" where the fingers insert into the slot to keep them in place.

- Cut out the tabs on the base of the head-piece, making sure to NOT cut the edge that is NOT marked with red. I repeat, you do NOT want to completely cut out these tabs.

- Fold the head together, making sure the tabs you cut out protrude from the bottom. Put a glue dot on the white side of the tip of Gilbert's beak, and squeeze the halves together tightly to form his beak.

- Put a dot of glue on the base of the head and insert the four tabs on the bottom of the head into the four slots labeled "neck slots" that folding his torso together should have created.

- Fold his ears forward slightly. Enough that they're standing "straight up."

- Take a thin, cylindrical object like a pencil or a straw, and starting from the tip, tightly curl Gilbert's tail around it, then release to make it curl.

- Enjoy your new little friend!

Have fun and happy building~
If you decide to actually make this toy, do take a picture and let me see. I'd love to see if someone actually makes their own.
