Dreamweaving by Galahawk Dreamweaving by Galahawk
This is what I've been doing in my illustration class for the last four weeks, working on a new character then making a lovely little illustration for it.
This is Dreamweaver. A character from a short, children's-story-esque story I might be writing (and possibly illustrating) eventually. And if so, this will be one of the pages from it. I really think what I like most about this is that I can actually use this character more practically than most of the other art I've done thus far.

For this entire character design, I wanted to break away from what I normally do in my pieces and that is making things more graphic, not really caring about anatomy so much as making it really stylized, and for this illustration, I used a limited color palette (yellow and violet with blue-green as an accent).

In short, Dreamweaver is the daughter of a bitter old sorceress, and got turned into an animal for disobeying her mother. She ran away and was taken in by a night goddess, who is in charge of nighttime, moon, stars, and sleep. At night she is absent and during the day she sleeps, so Dreamweaver occupies herself while the goddess is away by teaching herself to weave. One day, she discovers that she can take elements like peoples' thoughts, hopes, and desires and thread it together with light from the moon and stars to create magic yarn. Eventually, the goddess laments to her how the nighttime can only really be appreciated while awake, and how her nighttime is becoming underrated because of this, and as she sleeps that day, Dreamweaver takes her special yarn and effortlessly weaves a beautiful, blue blanket, throwing it over the goddess. As she slept, surreal, amazing visions filled her head and when she awoke, she discovered the visions were caused by the blanket Dreamweaver had made. This is where she realizes that she can give this gift to the people of the world as they sleep, and gives Dreamweaver the honor of making these blankets and throwing them over people all over the world as they sleep, granting them the ability to dream and making the goddess's nighttime that much more magical.

Well, that's how the story goes, anyway.
I desperately hope some day I'll have the time/energy/motivation to turn this whole concept into an illustrated children's story. D:
